Crude Birth Rate, Crude Death Rate, and Rate of Natural Increase

The crude birth rate(births/mid-year population*1,000) fell from 20 ‰ in early 1980s to below 10‰ in 2000s, and to 6.55‰ in 2021.
The crude death rate(deaths/mid-year population*1,000) rose from 5‰ in the 1980s to 7.83 ‰ in 2021.
The rate of natural increase (crude birth rate minus crude death rate) declined from over 10‰ in the 1980s to about -1.27 ‰ in 2021.

Life Expectancy at Birth

The average life expectancy at birth was 81.3 years in 2020 (78.1 years for males and 84.7 years for females both reached historic high). Over the long term the average life expectancy at birth tend to increase. Both Taiwanese males and females average life expectancy at birth each are 7.9 years and 9.7 years higher than the worldwide average.

Ten Leading Causes of Death

In 2020, there were 173,067 deaths and the crude mortality rate was 733.96 per 100,000 population, a decrease of 1.3% compared to 2019 and an increase of 17.4% compared to 2010.
In 2020, the ten leading causes of death accounted for 77.8% of all deaths, and were primarily chronic diseases.

After steadily rising since 1991, NHE surpassed NTD1,325 billion in 2020.
NHE as a share of GDP raised from 6.29% in 2010 to 6.69% in 2020.
